International Court of Justice delivered its judgment in the case concerning the Question of the Delimitation of the Continental Shelf between Nicaragua and Colombia

International Court of Justice delivered its judgment in the case concerning the Question of the Delimitation of the Continental Shelf between Nicaragua and Colombia beyond 200 nautical miles from the Nicaraguan Coast (Nicaragua v. Colombia).

The International Court of Justice rejected all the submissions filed by Nicaragua in the Question of the Delimitation of the Continental Shelf beyond 200 nautical miles from Nicaragua. By declaring that an extended continental shelf cannot encroach upon the maritime areas situated within 200 nautical miles of another State, the Court vindicated Colombia’s main position, thus making the scientific debate on whether Nicaragua had proven its alleged natural prolongation irrelevant.
